'So you don't want to Tinder anymore?'
'Just for awhile. For now.' Mia slowly stirring her scalding hot Jasmine tea. Evelyn still staring at Mia, not quite sure whether to continue probing on the matter.
'I- I just. I feel empty. Sometimes I feel that I am lonely. Sometimes I don't. But most of the time, it feels vacant. I'm not sure if it's because I don't have a boyfriend, and I'm not sure if it's not because of that.'
Mia pour a tiny sachet of Equal sugar, continuing to stir the beverage. Evelyn sighed, fighting a bit of the urge to give Mia a warm hug.
'I think it was fun before. Now it just feels repetitive. Same fun, different guys at different locations.'
'Oh babe, I am sorry you feel this way. I think it is a good idea, to just take a break. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. But at least you'll get some time for yourself. Some self-love and me time.'
Evelyn said, her hand reached out and held Mia's left hand across the metal table.
'I love you.' Mia smiled and remembered how both of them have always been there for each other. There were very little time spent apart in college, they had both studied and partied together. Their deep bond wasn't mere sisterhood, and it had survived well past college and into adulthood.
Evelyn is an almost opposite of Mia. They both graduated honors for their Bachelor's Degree in Law. Unlike Mia, Evelyn didn't intend to practice law. She had her mind set on being a writer, she casually works on her Etsy website but mostly focuses on literature pursuits. Evelyn's education was paid for and encouraged by her parents; she was a sheltered child.
Mia was basically a poster child for female empowerment. She came from a broken home, pulled herself together and is now working in one of the best law firms in New York. She is strong, ambitious and never apologized for her desires to make it to the top.
They were both different in their own ways, but there was one thing they shared together. Both Mia and Evelyn never judged each other. It was one of those best friends you have that you can say anything and everything, but they will always love and accept every inch of you.
'So... Is this Josh guy texting you?' Evelyn snickered. Her words intending to tease Mia.
'Ahh nooo. Don't remind me. It was soo embarrassing. I feel like changing my name and moving to another city.'Mia whispered softly, trying hard not to alert any of the other customers in the local coffee shop.
'Seee.. I think it's good you were off to an embarrassing start. You're always soo in control Mia.'
'Oh god. I wish I can just press reset and redo everything. He was such a hottie, Evelyn. You would totally dump Ed for him. Trust me.' Mia regretfully described her experience.
Evelyn laughed. Well sure, Ed isn't a hunk but her man definitely knows his way around Evelyn's heart. No two ways about that.
'Hmm. Why don't you do it? Just text him and say you want a do-over. I mean technically it isn't a Tinder date since you didn't get into his pants on the first date.' Evelyn cheekily said, followed by Mia's soft laugh.
'That's true. I've probably ruined whatever chances I have anyway.'
Mia had aroused both of their excitement. What could possibly go wrong, it's just an innocent text? Mia shared her screen with Evelyn as she logged into Tinder and clicked on Josh's profile.
'What? Don't judge me.' Mia said, aware that Evelyn read some of the past messages. Mia begun writing as Evelyn mumbled some words for hints on the perfect sentence to text Josh.
10 minutes passed as the texts were marked as 'seen' by Josh. No reply. Evelyn patted Mia's head reassuringly. 'Well, you can't get them all. Let's start that me-time shall we, Mia?'.
Mia put up a brave front, not showing how slightly disappointed she is on the outcome. As Evelyn walked towards the counter, intending to browse through their selection of delicious looking muffins, Mia's phone buzzed.
'Hey. I can't do Sunday night. I'm leaving tomorrow for a work thing, flight in the morning. How about tonight?'
Mia's eyes widened in disbelief. It had only been two days since the incident with Josh, his reply doesn't seem hostile or awkward.
He wants to see me too!
Mia was overjoyed, quickly turned around, eager to make sure Evelyn is updated. It is surely far more exciting than the fresh pastries she is glancing at.
