Day one in space. Nothing happened. Just the new routine I was trying to figure out. After we pass the INSS (International Space Station) we cut off the booster rockets and switch to the nucule auxiliary engine. This will provide cooling and power throughout the ship. Everything was normal. Well as normal as it can get traveling to another planet. The gravity sphere generators were working perfectly fine. I was doing my rounds when I got called to the bridge by Captain Miles. I reported back to him and made my way to the bridge to see what was up. "Hey, June I just wanted to relinquish control over to you while I get some sleep."I felt my anxiety levels rising from an already mission. I mean I know how to pilot this ship but actually doing it was something different altogether.
I took a calming breath and took over the controls. They felt heavier than the simulator controls. But I am able to move them with ease. I look out in the open blackness that shines with painted white lights. I thought to myself that this was something most people would want to see. I took out my issue tablets and took a picture. I would have to upload it to our social media accounts later but this was something truly amazing.
This was something I'll probably never forget as I take control of a vessel carrying 600 people which most are asleep except for the skeleton crew. It's just something I never thought I do something, I've never dreamed of doing either. My dream was to be a professor with the love of my life and kids, not this not some space explorer, not someone who is second-in-command and yet here I am. I swear that I don't want to be it and yet I excel at it I just don't understand why I was picked what made me so special. They pick me out of billions of people on this planet who are more than qualified. To stop these thoughts I put on my headphones and find a playlist. It was a playlist that I created just to 'Vibe' out to the first song on there was Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.
After the song was over I decided to just keep listening to music to calm my nerves. Controlling the ship was easy was just like the simulator but if I messed up it will cost us all. The only thing I really have to do besides keep my hands on the helm is make sure we stay on course check the computers and the temperature of the engine that's about it really. So all I can really do is just pay attention to all of that and then look out to the vest space before me. Seeing the trillions and trillions of stars out there moving from one star to another star within a few weeks it could be your new home. Or within seconds, days or weeks we can all die. I really need to stop thinking negatively but it's kind of hard when just barely over 50 people are awake and the rest are asleep. And it's even harder because we're the only ones who can save ourselves and no one else can help us it's just us floating in the bleakness of space. I wish I wasn't here about the same time it was an opportunity of a lifetime. I just wish that could have shared it with her. But I know that being up here with something that she always wants to do and I get to do it for her even if I die tomorrow or get lost in space I know it's what she wanted and maybe that's what I want to.
But it's something that I don't really think of not because it's hard or easy it's just taxing on my mind. It brings back memories that I don't want to forget. But that I don't want to bury either. These memories make me happy and now I get to share them with the Stars all around me and that's all I have to think about and the Stars. I'm with her and she's with me so even if I let her go I can always look up and look all around and see her. I start to refocus on the task at hand check the system gauges. I noticed that auxiliary engine one is running low. So I bring up the list of all active personnel on the Leviathan and saw that Marcus our chief engineer was one of the people who were awake with us.
"Hey Marcus this is your second-in-command June and I noticed that auxiliary engine number one is running a bit low I was just wondering if you can run a diagnostics check", I asked him and he said "Alright numero dos I will run a diagnostics check and send you the information once it's done just give me 10 minutes and you will have what you need." He said to me and 10 minutes later I have the diagnostics check and was the auxiliary engine number one is running low on cooling liquid. And before I can even ask Marcus to fill it up he already sent me a message saying he did and that he'll run a second check when it's done. Now that's what I like to hear this is day one on our Voyage to the red star and so far it's smooth sailing.
Let's just hope that it's all easy like this.
